Jean Sahmie loves being out of doors, and her love resonates in this jar which is fashioned from clay from the Hopi land and painted in natural, traditional pigments. The brush that so clearly delineates the lines of rain and steps of the mesas comes from the yucca plant. Jean is especially fond of parrots, seen on two sides of the jar. Notice how the fine-line parrot shape above the parrots seems to push the bold painted parrot to the foreground, while still maintaining the overall flat surface design.

Jean Sahmie is a fourth-generation descendent of Nampeyo, who revived Sityatki style pottery on the First Mesa.
