Clay People edited by Jonathan Batkin
$35.00

96 pp, Retail Price $35; 12 color and 50 duotone illustrations; 11" x 8 1/2"; Item# BA541

A catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same title at the Wheelwright Museum, May 14,- October 27, 1999.

This catalog illuminates the historic figurative tradition, especially of Cochiti and Tesuque pueblos, as well as the work of three innovative contemporary ceramists who are inspired by the human form -Nora Naranjo-Morse and Roxanne Swentzell of Santa Clara Pueblo, and Virgil Ortiz of Cochiti Pueblo. Chiricahua Apache Nancy Marie Mithlo (Ph.D. Stanford) writes essays on the work of the three contemporary artists, and plates of their work follow. Jonathan Batkin and Patricia Fogelman Lane discuss the history, social context, and tourist markets for the historical figurines, which date from 1870 to 1920. Black and white photographs of the historical pieces follow the essay.

This book is a seriously researched and readable look at a fascinating part of Puebloan clay art. The figures presented are full of humor, parody, cultural and historical meaning. Over 60 figures are included.
