Darren Vigil Gray: Counterclockwise by Lucy R. Lippard
$20.00

Essay by Lucy R. Lippard

A catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same title at the Wheelwright Museum, November 16, 2002 - April 27, 2003.

Contains 37 color reproductions of paintings that were in the exhibition along with commentary by the artist. The painting on the front cover, for example, has the following commentary from the artist:

The title refers to this secrect world that exists. It's supernatural, it's spiritual. This was completed very quickly, and it came after a whole summer of painting for my show in 2000. I was under pressure to get things photographed and framed, and I wanted to have something of this size in the show. Late in the afternoon I grabbed this empty canvas, stuck it on the wall, and proceeded to paint. The elements just started to flow. First came the bird heads, which orginally had bodies. I had seen something relating to Eastern religion, which had birds in this configuration, sprouting from a lotus or something, and I thought it was a great image. All of the rest was entirely out of my head. I completed it in a night and a day. When I finished it, the next day was my absolute deadline, and out it went, out the door, and I never saw it again. It has come back to me to visit. I'm always sad that I don't get to live with these paintings after they're finished.

-Darren Vigil Gray commentary on A CLOUD OUGHT TO APPEAR ABOVE HIM, 2000 (Acrylic on Canvas)
