The Earth, the Moon, and Stars Above
$20.00

A catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same title at the Wheelwright Museum, November 14, 2004 - April 24, 2005.

This handsome catalog includes 40 color photos of paintings and prints that were in the exhibition, along with commentary by the artist, Benjamin Harjo, Jr., and an essay on the artist by Julie Pearson Little Thunder.

Commentary for the painting seen on the cover of the catalog:

THE EARTH, THE MOON, AND THE STARS ABOVE, 2000
Gouche and Acrylic. 39 x 27.

Collection of Maria Dwight Le Vesconte.

A god or goddess holds the crescent moon. Stars are in the background, and on each side of the figure's head is an owl. At the lower left is a silhouette of a person's profile. The ribbon that is floating out from the figure is just an indication of motion. This piece was partially inspired by a painting by Blackbear Bosin (Commance/Kiowa, 1921 - 1980), which depicts a warrior who is sitting out on the prairie, and an owl has lighted on his shoulder.
