Face to Face: Portraits by America Meredith
$15.00
A catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same title at the Wheelwright Museum, November 19, 2006 - April 29, 2007.
America Meredith, a member of the Cherokee Nation, is of mixed ancestry (predominantly Swedish). She is interested in what such combinations mean in this society. This is the publication of Meredith’s acrylic portraits from the exhibition at the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian, November 2006 through April 2007.
The central image of this exhibition and of the resulting publication is “Agalisiga Checks a Box,” a picture of a child playing in a cardboard box, and a visual comment on identity puzzles in the United States of the twenty-first century. Children, elders, the artist’s family and friends appear - sometimes as metaphors - in the portraits, which are based on photographs.
The introduction by Lucy R. Lippard places the artist and her work in context. Meredith’s background, her art, its inspiration and nuances are discussed. Each of the eleven color plates includes commentary by the artist.
Says Meredith, “For me, art’s the vehicle. It’s not the destination. I don’t do ‘art’ for art’s sake. I do art specifically to talk about Native American issues.”
