Russell graduated from Pojoaque High School and the College of Santa Fe.  His aunt is Rose Gonzales, who began guiding & encouraging him to make pottery when he was 12 years old.  Potter Dora Tse-Pe also
was another person that was an inspiration to Russell.  As early as 1973 he began receiving awards.
He gathers red slip from Santo Domingo and Abiquiu areas.  He uses a distinctive green slip that polishes like jade.
