Excerpts from the artist commentary:
"I began by making belts because nobody was doing the style of belt that I wanted to see -- that I would buy and use for myself. I challenged myself to figure out how it's done. Sometimes I can just meditate and figure things out."
"I like to look at Classic period Navajo textiles for inspiration, or as a way to guide me through some of my problems with design and color.
All my weaving is rooted in something very traditional....."
"The light color in this belt is Navajo tea, and the medium brown is Maxwell House French Roast Coffee....The other belt is dyed with Starbucks coffee. I put a little line of indigo in there to suggest the spirit line. Weavers of Two Grey Hills rugs insert a spirit line in the design area that runs to the outside edge of the textile. It serves as an opening so that they don't trap their creativity in one piece."
