Zuni Fetish Carvers: The Mid-Century Masters by Kent McManis
$18.00

Laurie McManis

An eagerly awaited and essential title for those who collect and admire fetish carvings: ZUNI FETISH CARVERS OF THE 1970s; A BRIDGE FROM PAST TO PRESENT

Kent and Laurie McManis

A catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same title at the Wheelwright Museum, June 25 -October 30, 2005.

Based on a 2005 exhibition at the Wheelwright Museum, this book focuses on the decade when Zuni fetish carving was at a crossroads. The text begins with a discussion of the artistic and economic climate of Zuni in the 1970s. Biographical information on the carvers follows and includes details and family photos not before seen. Lesser-known carvers, as well as renowned artists, are profiled. Old Man Acque, Leonard Halate, Sarah Leekya, the Boone family, Bobby Lonasee, the Quams, the Quandelacys, and the Tsikewas are among the over 30 artists included. The majority of the book is a presentation of colored plates and brief descriptions of works by each carver. Most of the fetishes featured date to the 1970s, and all were made between about 1965 and 1985. A short bibliography concludes the book.

This work is important for its attention to the artist's point of view. It reflects many hours of interviews with carvers and their families and with traders and dealers who sell their work.

"In presenting this project, we pay tribute to those Zuni artists who kept an age-old tradition moving forward when it easily could have passed into history."
