The Wheelwright Museum collects objects and archives pertaining to the arts and cultures of the Navajo, the Rio Grande Pueblos, and other native peoples of New Mexico. Recent acquisitions include major collections of southwestern baskets, Cochiti figurines, and modern Navajo and Pueblo jewelry. We specialize in genres that other institutions have overlooked—for example, the Wheelwright was the first museum to actively pursue Navajo folk art and “tourist” silver.

We also collect the work of living Native American artists with whom we have presented exhibitions. Among the artists who have donated work to the Wheelwright are David Bradley, Harry Fonseca, Judith Lowry, and Emmi Whitehorse. The museum’s Collectors’ Circle has enabled us to acquire works by Shonto Begay, Yazzie Johnson and Gail Bird, and Julia Jumbo. Through the generosity of private donors we have acquired pieces by Aaron Freeland, Tony Jojola, Frank LaPena, and others.
