Opportunities to Donate
The Wheelwright Museum first opened its doors in 1937. It is a private, nonprofit corporation. Museum admission is free, and most of its many events — slide-lectures, gallery tours, artist and author talks, demonstrations, performances, children's activities, and more — are free. Everything that the museum does is made possible by donations from individuals and organizations. Your gift, which benefits you by being tax-deductible, is carefully managed by the museum's professional staff, board of trustees, and foundation.
There are several ways you can donate to the museum.
- In your will: A bequest to the Wheelwright Museum can help continue the exhibitions and programs that bring both living Native American artists and important historic collections before the public. To provide for us in your will, contact your attorney.
- From your stock portfolio: Simply ask your broker to transfer shares of stock to the Wheelwright. Call the museum at 505-982-4636 or 800-607-4636 and ask for the business department.
- By donating funds to these worthwhile campaigns:
The Endowment Campaign.
In December 1998, the National Endowment for the Humanities awarded the museum a $300,000 challenge grant to build its endowment fund. The 4:1 award requires the museum to raise an additional $1.2 million by mid-2002. Yearly income from the $1.5 million in new endowed funds will support salary for the curator, honoraria for guest curators, authors, and speakers; and production of catalogs and videos. Your contribution will help secure the future of the museum.
The Annual Fund
This helps the museum meet its operating needs while continuing to improve and expand in other areas. Over the past ten years, the Wheelwright has undertaken major building improvements and additions, and launched important exhibitions. Your donation to the annual fund sustains the base from which these works are begun.
The Annual Benefit Auction
Held every year just before Indian Market weekend, this is the museum's largest fund-raiser. Money raised at the auction is used for operating expenses. Is your collection outgrowing your home? Donations are needed for the silent and live auctions. Of course, you are welcome to send cash as well. Be sure to come to the auction, too — it's a lot of fun, and your purchases support the museum.
