Nizhoni Shima: Master Weavers of the Toadlena/Two Grey Hills Region
May 15, 2010–April 17, 2011

From May 16, 2010, through April 17, 2011, the Wheelwright Museum presents iconic textiles made by master weavers of the community surrounding the Toadlena and Two Grey Hills trading posts. Based on more than twenty years of research by trader Mark Winter, and featuring rugs and tapestries dating from circa 1910 to the present, the exhibition explores the historic lifeways, painstaking technique, and family connections that have fostered one of the world’s great craft traditions. Included are masterworks by Daisy Taugelchee, Bessie Manygoats, Clara Sherman, and many others. In addition the exhibition celebrates contemporary weavers such as Rose Curley, Salina Dale, and Mary Ann Foster, through whose hands the tradition flourishes.

Public opening: Saturday, May 15, 2010, 5-7 p.m. Free admission.

30: A New Collection of Works by Stephen Wood
April 17, 2010–September 19, 2010

When asked to create a show for the Wheelwright, Cherokee artist Stephen Wood knew what he would title it. "I just turned 30 at the end of January. This was a source of a small amount of strife for me. I actually ran away on a two-week roadtrip with some friends to try and avoid it. It still found me. It has caused me to take stock of myself and my art and just exactly where they belong in relationship to each other. Now that I'm settling into the idea of being thirty, it is quite exhilarating. This has already been an amazing year with new and exciting things unfolding. Including this show, which I couldn't be more thrilled about. ... I really want to use this show as an opportunity to make a statement, not a political one, an artistic one. One that shows where I'm at, what I've learned about my art, and hopefully where it's going. ... This show should be an example of that fruition, 30 years of taking it all in, influences both artist and non."

Public opening: Saturday, April 17, 2010, 5-7 p.m. Free admission.
